Montpelier and St Andrews Park!

The verge along Fairlawn Road this afternoon produced a Tree Bumblebee, a couple of Harlequin Ladybirds, a Large Red Damselfly and the hoverflies Myathropa florea and Syritta pipiens.

At St Andrews Park meadow area there was a Solitary Wasp apparently in the Pemphredon family, a presumed Nomad Bee and lots of Swollen-thighed Flower Beetles.

St Andrews Park!

The meadow area of the park has become impressively biodiverse since it was planted about 6 or 7 years ago. Today there was a Speckled Wood butterfly, an Ichneumon Wasp, a Scarlet Tiger moth caterpillar, a probable Phyllobius weevil, several probable Raspberry Beetles or close relative, a few Anthomyia flies, a Speckled Bush-cricket nymph plus Buff-tailed Bumblebees and Common Carder Bees. Hoverflies were well represented with a Marmalade Fly, a Platycheirus, a Melanostoma, an Eupeodes, Melanogaster (my first for the patch if I remember rightly) and a Syritta pipiens. It was lovely to see the first Yellow Rattle flowers of the year.

In the bath this morning I was greeted by a small Centipede which an expert on Facebook thinks is a possible Lithobius melanopa.

St Andrews Park!

The sun came out after a long wait this afternoon and the planted flower meadow was alive with Honey Bees, Red-tailed Bumblebees, Large White butterflies plus a Syritta pipiens hoverfly. A tiny Mirid Bug was also seen but I can't ID it to species.

In the wildlife meadow and pond there were lots of Green Shieldbugs, Common Carder Bees and Garden Spiders plus a Wolf Spider and a micro-moth that is probably Crambus perlela.

Three young Carrion Crows were 'anting' near the pond, anointing their plumage with the insects so that the formic acid could destroy parasites.

The attractive bug Rhopalus subrufus was sitting on a leaf and a Speckled Wood was enjoying the sunshine. A Rose Chafer was bombing around with a low hum.

Away from the park, several sawflies which I think are Turnip Sawflies were at Fairlawn Road, and along the bridge some Redshank (Persicaria) leaves and a flowering Solanum sp. were notable.

A Holly Blue was in the garden again this afternoon.

St Andrews Park

A happy hour spent in the meadow and pond area produced a Red Admiral (sadly it didn't pose for a photo), several tadpoles, a Leafcutter Bee, a hoverfly Syritta pipiens, a tiny ground bug (or plant bug), a Sawfly, a Cheilosia hoverfly, and a Red-tailed Bumblebee. A forest of of Wild Teasel and some Agrimony in flower.

A stroll round the nature reserve this morning produced: 4 Chiffchaffs (presumably migrants), 1 Bullfinch calling, 1 Linnet to NE over hill, 1 Jay (cutting).

Invertebrates included 1 Speckled Wood, 1 Syritta pipiens hoverfly, 2 or 3 Syrphus hoverflies, 1 Eristalis tenax hoverfly, 1 Large Red-tailed Bumblebee,  several Common Carder Bees, 1 Dock Leaf Bug.
